TEACHERS TRAINING PROGRAMME ON HUMANE EDUCATION

I PROGRAMME
Venue : Sri Venugopal Vidyalaya
7, Sringeri Mutt Road, Mandaveli, Chennai-28
Dates : 26-6-2002 to 29-6-2002

Karuna International conducted Teachers Training Programme on Humane Education for four days in the city schools of Chennai in association with Animal Welfare Board of India. The first programme was hosted by Sri Venugopal Vidyalaya, Mandaveli. In his inaugural speech, Sri. Somesh Banik stressed the need for human values in school curriculum. Sri. Surendra M. Mehta, Chairman, Karuna International in his presidential address pointed out the importance of value based education in the present world. He brought to notice the cruelty of animals in many places for selfish needs. Sri. Dulichand Jain, President, Karuna International thanked the Animal Welfare Board of India for entrusting the Project to Karuna International, Smt. Rukmani Sankaran, Principal welcomed the gathering. 30 teachers from the neighbouring schools participated in the training programme. There were a host of Resource persons who gave lectures to the teacher trainees on all the four days.

Dr. Lakshman Rao, an eminent educationist and mathematician emphasised that we have not understood what kindness is, we are unkind to others. Hence we are losing touch with the plant and animal world and endangering both plant and animal life.
Mr. Mahadevan from Dayananda Foundation spoke on the need for inculcating our heritage and traditional values to children.
Smt. Vasanta Soundarrajan, a naturopath advocated our traditional way of life and how herbal products can keep us healthy.
Mrs. Madhu Mohan mentioned that beauty products without animal products are available. Mrs. Jarina gave a session on nutritious way of life. Mrs. Kavitha from C.P.R. Environment Centre gave a lecture demonstration on Pollution free environment and the causes of pollution. Swami Mithrananda from Chinmaya Mission stressed that absence of pride, attachment and possessiveness, Self study and giving up desires are the values to be cultivated. Mr. Shantilal Nahar spoke on kindness and compassion as the basis of human life. Sri. Dulichand Jain gave details about Karuna Club project and how to organise effective Karuna Clubs.
Mrs. Geetha Rajagopal, an eminent educationist motivated the teachers on inculcating values of kindness and compassion through Animal Welfare in the curriculum. There was a brain storming session and teachers came with a lot of ideas.
The teachers visited the vegetarian Village near Puzhal on 28-6-02. They visited the 'Ghosala' also.
Sri. Bhanwarlal Gothi presided over the Valedictory function and distributed the Certificates to 21 teachers who attended on all 4 days. Sri. Suresh Kankaria was the Chief Guest. Mrs. Komala Kalpavalli, Liason Officer, Karuna International proposed the vote of thanks. The function ended with National Anthem.


II PROGRAMME

83, Big Street, Triplicane, Chennai - 600 005.
Dates : 6, 7, 13, 14 July 2002

The Second Humane Education Training Programme for teachers was inaugurated by Sri. Surendra M. Mehta, Chairman, Karuna International on 06-07-2002 at 10.00 A.M. symbolically by lighting the lamp. The Principal of the school, Mrs. Prem Dulari Welcomed the august gathering of teachers. Dr. K. Ganesan, former Principal, Vivekananda College in his key note Address, emphasised the importance of human values in the society and the value of Karuna in daily life. The session was followed by 'Animal Welfare theme in school curriculum' by Mrs. Geetha Rajagopal. She emphasised on inculcating values of kindness and compassion in school children through the medium of animal welfare. She brought to focus the cruelties done on animals and pointed out the need to prevent them.

There were two sessions on pollution free Environment and eco-friendliness by Mr. Jayaseelan Director, TNPCB and Mr. Ramachandra, M.E. and Mr. Vijay Anand, which were very informative.
There was a session on Nutrition and Vegetarianism by Mrs. Usha Ravi, HOD, Dept. of Nutrition, MOP Vaishnav College for Women, which was very useful.
The second day (07-07-2002) began with the presentation of paper by Mrs. Saraswathi Ramaraj, on Role of animals and Prevention of Cruelty towards animals which was very informative and thought provoking.

Sri. Dulichand Jain who spoke on Karuna Stories from Jainism which was very interesting and full of compassion. It was followed by a question and answer session. All the stories of Thirthankaras bring out compassion and are to be narrated to children.
The afternoon session was taken by Dr. Malathi, an animal activist who inspiringly spoke on cruelty to animals and emotionally appealed to all the teachers to prevent cruelty and do the needful to protect the animals friends. Teachers were enthralled by her speech.
The next session was by Mr. M.A. Venkata Krishnan, Dept. of Vaishnavision Madras University who gave a very interesting talk on stories from our epics & Puranas. He narrated episodes from Ramayana and our scriptures.

The day ended with the inspiring and touching remarks made by Sri. N.C. Raghavachari, Vice President, SPCA, who literally shed tears telling about the cruelties done to cows. He presented the laws and rights protecting the animal kingdom.
The third day, the teacher trainees visited the vegetarian village at Puzhal and the cow shelter, pinjarapole in Otteri. The teachers were overwhelmed to see 1500 cows nearly, taken care by thepeople there and presented Rs.1,001/- to that institution.
On the fourth day, guided by Mrs. Geetha Rajagopal, the teachers presented charts, models, skit and Role play. Mr. S.V. Kumar convened activities and games for children.
The valedictory function was graced by Mr. Babu, Asst. Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India, Sri. Suresh Kankaria, Karuna International, and Ms. J. Uma Maheswari, Joint Director, Education Department Research & Training. They were happy to see the workshop and the interest shown by the teachers.


III PROGRAMME

Venue : Lalchand Milapchand Dadha Secondary School,
Choolaimedu, Chennai.
Dates : 10th to 13th July, 2002


The third Teachers' Training Programme was inaugurated on 10th July, 2002 at 10.00 A.M. by Shri G.L. Surana, Vice President, Karuna International. The Chief Guests were Mr. Mahendra Dadha and Mrs. Meena Dadha, Chairman, Dadha Schools and founder of MUKTHI, an institution for supplying artificial limbs located at Meenambakkam. There was a very useful and enlightening video presentation of MUKTHI by Mrs. Meena Dadha. Mr. Dulichand Jain and Mr. Shanthilal Nahar, Karuna International explained to the teachers, the need of such teachers' training programmes.

The message that inspired everyone was that sympathy alone would not suffice and sympathy in action is very important, which is called empathy.

The inauguration was followed by an introductory session on Animal Welfare in school curriculam by Mrs. Geetha Rajagopal, an educationist and Animal Welfare Activist. She motivated the teachers to think about the need for protecting animals from cruelty and inculcating the values of kindness and compassion in school children though value-based education. The session was followed by an activity session of ORIGAMY, making paper models of birds and animals by Mrs. Nirmala Baskar.

The need for 'Harmony with nature' was stressed and beautifully presented by Shri Muthukrishnan, Principal, Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Anna Nagar.

The last session of the day was by Mrs. Gouhar Aziz, Secretary (Hony.) Member, National Cattle Commission, who is a dedicated Animal Activist. Her experiences in protecting the cattle and the horses from cruelty made everyone feel their duty in animal welfare.

The second day of the training programme began with the lecture of Shri Vel Nagarajan from the ‘Yoga Shanthi’ institution, West Mambalam. He quoted incidents from Mahatma Gandhi and Tilak and stressed the importance of Non-violence.

Dr. S.P. Krishnamurthy, Retd. Director of Animal Husbandary enumerated the various diseases of the cattle and their treatment and cure.

Mr. Vijay Anand, EXNORA, President, Youth Wing, highlighted the need for using eco-friendly plastics.

Shri Dulichand Jain, President, Karuna International, spoke on the importance of 'Karuna' and value based education. He pointed out that Karuna is the mother of all virtues and concern for fellow being should be developed in children.

Mr. Shantilal Nahar, President, Chennai Kendra, Karuna International, gave a very inspiring session on what is kindness and how by giving to others we gain ultimately. Kindness is the virtue which brings all other virtues to man.

There was a very lively session by Cartoonist Sri Ramanujam (Ranu) on drawing animals in a simple way. Teachers appreciated and enjoyed the session. On the third day, the teachers visited the bird sanctuary maintained by Mr. S.S. Vasan, where beautiful, colourful species including many rare species are maintained.

On the last day of the training proramme, teachers had prepared a lot of charts and models on animal welfare theme and harmony with nature. Mrs. Vasanthi Rajiv from Blue Cross demonstrated with her Dr. Dogs how mongrels behave like companions and are useful in curing diseases like depression and Blood pressure. Mrs. Geetha Rajagopal guided the teachers in preparing a curriculum on humane education.

The day began with a talk on stories in our epics and puranas by Mrs. Sudha Seshayyan who quoted a lot of anecdotes, how animals were always revered and worshipped in our culture.
There was an exhibition by teachers and Smt. Shobha Krishnan, Correspondent, L.M. Dadha School and Sri Sajjan Raj Surana, Secretary, Karuna International, Chennai Kendra appreciated the exhibits.

The teachers gave their suggestions to incorporate the animal welfare theme in school curriculum.


IV PROGRAMME
Venue : Sri Sarawathi Matricultion School,
1, Vijayalakshmi Nagar, Redhills Road, Kallikuppam, Chennai - 600 053.
Dates : 23rd, 24th, 30 to 31st August 2002.

The fourth Teachers Training Programmes was organised by Sri Sarawathi Matriculation School, Kallikuppam. Dr. Somesh Banik, Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India lighted the lamp and inaugurated the Teachers Training Programme on 23rd August 2002 at 10.00 A.M. He expressed his happiness in participating in such programmes as teachers are the torch bearers who can shape the future citizens.

The programme was presided by Sri. Surendra M. Mehta ‘Jaina Ratna’ awardee and Chairman, Karuna International who blessed the teachers in their endeavour.
Sri. T. Chakravarthy, Secretary, Vivekananda Educational Society was the Special invitee and Chief Guest who was highly appreciative of the Training Programme. According to him, education is no education if it does not give human values.

The first session was taken by Sri. V. Shanmuganathan, Social Worker and educationist who stressed the need to protect cows. He said that cows are killed cruelly, their legs are cut and boling water is poured on them. He requested the teachers to take a vow that they will work for the ban on cow slaughter and inculcate values in the minds of children.
Mrs. Gouhar Aziz, Member, National Cattle Commission Government of India vividly narrated her experience in the field of animal protection. She narrated a painful incident of how cows were taken to slaughter houses in Orissa and how with the help of Chairman Sri. Gumanmal Lodha, they were able to prevent it.

On the second day, Dr.Chinnikrishna, Chairman, Blue Cross of India expressed that violence begets violence and in school days children should not be allowed to pin down the animals and do dissection. CBSE has banned dissection. He also spoke on the Animal Birth Control Programme (ABC) of the Blue Cross of India.
Dr. Malathi, Member SPCA highlighted the importance of treating animals as our friends, as a part of our family. She painfully narrated how stray dogs are eloctrocuted and how in circuses bears are made to dance on hot plates.

Mrs.Geetha Rajagopal, Trainer formerly with Animal Welfare Board of India, an Animal Activist who has conducted a number of workshops of this kind guided the teachers with ideas for the school curriculum. She highlighted the need for virtual dissection in schools and colleges. She also mentioned about the cruel sight of child labour in slaughter houses.
On 30th Krishna Jayanthi day, teachers, went to Pinjarapole Cattle Shelter at Ayanavaram and appreciated the efforts of the people in maintaining 1500 cows. They also saw the Bio gas plant in operation, being used as cooking gas. They also visited the Blue Cross of India at Velacheri and were touched by the way the stray dogs are taken care of and the service of the doctors and volunteers.

This was followed by Sri.A.R. Shantilal Nahar who spoke on how to inculcate values in children. He engaged the teachers with a management game which kept the teachers active and they enjoyed the activity very much. His session was vibrant with lot of ideas.
The valedictory session started at 3.00 p.m. Mr.K.Babu, Asst. Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India addressed the teachers and impressed upon them about the importance of the training.
Mr.A.R. Shantilal Nahar distributed the Certificate to teacher trainees.
The teachers had exhibited charts & models on the theme Karuna & Environment. The exhibits were original and thought provoking.


V PROGRAMME
Venue : Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School,
11, Thirumalai Pillai Road, T.Nagar, Chennai - 600 017.
Dates : 2,3,4 & 6 September 2002.

The Fifth Teacher's Training Programme on Humane Education was conducted at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, Thirumalai Pillai Road, T.Nagar on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th of September 2002. On 2nd at 9.30 A.M. the inaugural function was held. Mrs. Valli Arunachalam, Vice-Principal, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, welcomed the august gathering.
The workshop was inaugurated by Sri. Somesh Banik, Veternarian and Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India. He congratulated the Karuna International for arranging good training programmes for teachers and in his speech, highlighted the noble work of teachers as nation builders.
Dr.Chinni Krishna, Vice Chairman, AWBI and Chairman, Blue Cross of India recollected his past association with Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and appreciated the management of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan always being a supporter and patron of animal Welfare.
Dr. (Mrs.) Y.G. Parthsarathy expressed her deep love for animals and reiterated that schools and teachers should own responsibility and take up the work of protection of animals upon their shoulders.

Sri. Dulichand Jain, gave an introduction to the workshop and thanked Animal Welfare Board of India for entrusting the project to Karuna International.
As a part of the workshop, teachers were taken to J.Farm, Kelambakkam. The organic Farming Research and development Centre was established by Sri. Anantha Ramakrishnan and now it is doing tremeudous work in Agriculture under the able guidance of Dr.Nagarajan and Mrs. Jayasree Venkatraman. Dr. Jayam spoke on vegetarian diet and the lectures by all the three Resource Persons were very useful and informative. The hospitality extended by Mrs. Jayasree was very touching. The teachers were welcomed with a treat of delicious tender coconuts and sumptuous meals were served. They gifted everyone with a pack of organic Tea. Their hospitality will ever remain green in our memory.

The second day started with Dr.Balaji stressing on the Role of animals in the environment.
Sri.M.Jagannathan, social worker and educationist gave a very interesting and humorous talk on the role of teachers in inculcating human values to students. He highlighted the significance of unity of thought, word and deed and quoted Kanchi Paramacharya for taking minimum from the earth. His speech was thought provoking. He laid stress on practice of values in practical life.
On the Concluding day, there was valedictory session and certificates were given to teachers. Mr.Babu, Asst. Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India stressed upon the role of teachers in framing a curriculum. Dr.Rajkumari Chandrasekar, Chairman, Academic Council of Karuna International, also emphasised on the important role teachers should play in spreading the values of kindness and compassion. Next session was by Dr. Malathi, SPCA Member. She spoke on ‘Animal Friends' and how to protect them.

The afternoon session started with Mrs. Sudha Uma Shankar, a leading journalist. She dealt with the cruelties perpetrated on the animals. She also gave the alternates for using animal products.
It was followed by Mr. Y.K. Somasekhar, an entrepreneur and a leading Plastic industrialist in the small scale sector, emphasised on the advantages and disadvantages of plstic. He showe slides and stressed the need for regregating and reusing plastic. He created an awareness that plastic is not a for but a friend if we know to use it properly.

There was a session on "Wealth from Waste" by Mrs.Kamala Ravikumar, who demonstrated making paper bags. It was an interesting and useful session.
Sri.Shantilal Nahar, President, Chennai Kendra spoke on personality Development with reference to developing good qualities and made everyone feel proud and optimistic about their personality. It was an excellent experience listening to him. He started with meditation and it was a refreshing exercise.


VI PROGRAMME
Venue : Sri. S.J.T. Surana Jain Vidyalaya,
2/17, Managappan Street, Sowcarpet, Chennai-79
Dates : 26, 27, 30 September & 1st October 2002

Karuna International organised the Sixth training programme at S.J.T. Surana Jain Vidyalaya, 2/17, Managappan Street, Sowcarpet, Chennai-79.
Sri Himmatlal Mardia, Senior Advocate, Madras High Court, Adviser, Karuna International Chennai Kendra inaugurated the workshop. Dr. Somesh Banik, Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India presided over the function and Dr. Gyanchand Jain was the Chief Guest.
Sri. Dulichand Jain gave an introductory speech. He explained the need to protect the earth and the Species of animals and plant kingdom. He thanked the Animal Welfare Board of India for sanctioning funds for the programme.

Dr. Somesh Banik, appreciated such training programmes for teachers. He mentioned how recently they saved animals from slaughter.
Sri Gyanchand Jain in his speech explained the difference between human and humane education, the ‘e’ referring to energy directed in the right direction and also enlightenment of individuals about the cause of compassion. He said that compassion is suffering for others and quoted Lord Mahavira's aphorisms. Miss. Urmila Vyas and Sri. Devarajan were the other dignitaries.
The first session was by Sri. V. Shanmuganathan, social worker. In his speech he explained about the purpose of Karuna International in conducting teacher training programmes.

The afternoon session was by Mrs. Geetha Rajagopal, Trainer in Animal Welfare. She explained the need for including animal welfare theme in school curriculum. She explained about the cruelties meted out to animals, experimentation and dissection of animals and about children working in slaughter houses. She motivated the teachers for activity based curriculum.
The teachers got into 4 groups namely Dog, Tiger, peacock and Cow and had discussion on how to bring the animal welfare theme in the school syllabus.

Sri Dulichand Jain's speech on ‘compassion stories’ in Jainism was good. He narrated incidents from the lives of Thirthankaras. He mentioned about the six vices a human being should avoid and also the significance of Paryushan Parva which is a ‘Festival of Values’. It was a very enlightening spiritual exercise.
Sri. Shanthilal Nahar brought out the difference between an effective and efficient teacher. He told the teachers to take pride in their profession and that teachers should show love like mothers. He pointed out the importance of Positive thinking and the need to have a role model in one's life.
Sri. Pukraj Jain, Sri. Mahendra Kumar, Sri. Himmatmal Mardia, Sri. Shantilal Nahar, Sri. G.L. Surana, Sri. Sajjan Raj Surana and Sri. Suresh Kankaria were the other dignitaries present on the occasion. Sri. Shanthilal Nahar highlighted the salient teachings of Lord Mahavira as Live and Let Live and the purity of character. It was followed by the Report of Mrs. Meenakshi, Headmistress, Sri. S.J.T. Surana Jain Vidyalaya, Chennai-79, about the training programme. Then the teacher trainees Mrs. Mohana, Vice Principal, Modern Senior Sec. School, Nanganallur and Mrs. Sasi Prabha, Guru Sree Shanthi Vijay Jain Vidyalaya, Vepery shared their experiences about the training programme. Sri. Sajjan Raj Surana proposed the vote of thanks. There was an exhibition on Karuna and Environment by the teachers. It was inaugurated by Sri. Kailashmull Dugar, Vice President, Karuna International. He expressed his happiness and highlighted the importance of the programme.

The last day of the workshop on 1st October was assigned for visiting Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Basheer Ahmed took all the teachers around the various department for small and big animals, x-ray unit, scanning unit and the shelter for Rabied dogs, Cattle Section etc.


VII PROGRAMME
Venue : Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Sr. Sec. School,
29, Alagirisamy Salai, K.K. Nagar, Chennai-78.
Dates : 18th, 19th, 24th to 26th October 2002

The Seventh Teachers Training Programme on Humane Education was held at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Sr. Sec. School, K.K. Nagar being inaugurated by Sri. Sellamuthu, IAS, The inauguration function was graced by dignitaries including Dr. Mrs. Y.G. Parthasarathy, Dean and Director, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Sr. Sec. Schools. Mr. Babu, Assistant Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India, Mr. Dulichand Jain, President, Karuna International.
Mrs. Hamsa Ramdoss, Principal, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Sr. Sec. School, welcomed the august gathering Mr. Dulichand Jain appreciated the school and stressed the objective of the workshop which was inculcate the value of compassion in the minds of children with the help of teachers.

Mr. Sellamuthu quoted Bharathiar who prayed god to give a heart that will forgive even enemies. This is real compassion. He also referred to a land where tigers and lions are tamed.
Dr. Mrs. Y.G. Parthasarathy expressed her happiness in hosting the event. She requested the teachers to make every child feel important about himself. This is very important for the growth of the child.

Mr. Babu, Assistant Secretary enlightened the participants about the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act passed by Government in 1960 and its provision in Article 51A(g) of the Constitution making it a fundamental duty of every citizen take care of animals.
Mr. M.B. Nirmal, Founder Chairman Exnora explained about ‘trash treasure Bank' and about maintaining a Zero waste home.
The post lunch session began with an entertaining management game conducted by Mr. Shantilal Nahar who spoke on ‘Charisma thro' Karuna' spelling out the components of Charisma.
Mr. Kumar involved the participants in an activity session making a novel piggy bank.
The second day commenced with an informative talk by Dr. Geetha Jayakumar, Director, Chennai Chapter, Beauty Without Cruelty. She enlightened the participants about the cruelties involved in making of silk, Cosmetics and Jewellery which made everyone yearn for ‘Life of minimal harm'.
This was followed by a very informative talk by the dynamic, proactive environmentalist Mr. Sultan Ismail who demonstrated with slides the method of recycling organic waste with earthworms.
Mrs. Geetha Rajagopal, Educationist laid emphasis on the value of compassion and how the animal welfare theme can be incorporated in the school curriculum. Teachers were divided into groups and were asked to put their ideas subjectwise in the curriculum.

On 24th October the teachers went on a visit to the Tamil Nadu Veterinary Hospital, vepery which is rated the best in Asia. The doctors were very kind and patiently took around to show the latest equipments. It gave a mental satisfaction that animals are taken care of just like human beings.
They also visited ‘People for animals’ shelter which was formerly a dog's pound where dogs were cruelty electrocuted. This was followed by a visit to Jaigopal Garodia Jevan Daya Kendra at Puzhal where animals like cats, dogs, goats, cows, bulls, buffaloes and horses are taken care of.
They also visited Exnora International Office at Giriappa road to see how the ideas of M.B. Nirmal have taken shape in reality. The participants learnt how greenery could be created by simple methods.

The last day commenced with a talk on ‘Special Children' by Mrs. Poonam Natarajan, the founder Chairman of Vidya Sagar, Mrs. Natarajan advocated the inclusion of disabled children in normal schools. Mr. Dhanasekar a physically challenged person shared his experience of being a student in normal school.

Mrs. Gayathri Sundaram, the dance teacher in Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, presented a programme on snakes in total theatre. The programme helped to dispel certain myths about snakes.
Prof. C.S. Krishnan, Vice President, of Karuna International shared his impressions of the world vegetarian Congress which he had attended in Scotland.
Mrs. Maya Gaitonde of Bala Mandir elucidated the importance of Value Education in schools.
Dr. Somesh Banik, Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India spelt out with the help of OHP, the provisions of the prevention of cruelty to Animals Act and the goal of Animal Welfare Board in detail.

The participants were asked to exhibit their models and share their impressions of the workshop.
In the Valedictory function, the report was read out followed by prize distribution for those who had scored well in the written Quiz. All the participants were given certificates by Dr. Somesh Banik, Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India.


VIII PROGRAMME
Venue : Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Virugambakkam, Chennai.
Dates : 30th, 31st Oct., 6th & 7th Nov. 2002

The inaugural function was held on 30th Oct. 2002 with Dr. Somesh Banik giving the presidential note. Swamiji, Br Govind Chaitanya lit the kuthuvillakku marking an auspicious beginning. Sri Dulichand Jain gave a brief introduction about the workshop.
The first lecture was given by Swamiji Govinda Chaithanya, on VALUES. An expert in the field, he vividly explained how developing values leads to change in attitudes which in turn leads to acceptance of experiences of any kind as a step to greater wisdom which in turn allows man to develop more values. Thus encompassed in a beautiful world of rich experiences man unfolds into a fruitful being.

On the second day the teachers visited the VETERINARY HOSPITAL at Vepery. The hospital is fully furnished with all the state-of-the-art equipment of latest technology x-ray machines, scanners, laser treatment, ECG, et al. The lecture given by Dr. Basheer Ahmed was an eye-opener. He explained how most difficulties that animals experience are man made and how proper actions on our part can help avoid these. His statement that cows were being injected with hormones by milk men to increase milk production came as a shock.

There was a very informative POWER POINT PRESENTATION on Nutrition and Balanced diet by Mrs. Catherene Issac. Dr.K. Malathy, Reader in Micro biology, Royapettah hospital, gave a heart-rending account of how stray animals are being illtreated and left uncared for. She came up with the most practical ideas like feeding dogs and cats in our neighbourhood, informing proper authorities like the Blue Cross when we come across an animal in distress and most important of all voicing our views on cruelty meted to animals and educating public to create the awareness.
Undeterred by the torrential rains the program continued for the third day with a very informative talk by Dr. S. Chinny Krishna, the Chairman of the Blue Cross dealt with VIOLENCE FREE SCIENCE, the need to take effective steps to find alternate methods to teach children and thus avoid the harmful effects of “desensitizing" them at a very young age. Simulation, in the place of dissection, could be used, he said. The next subject was the ANIMAL BIRTH CONTROL program - the sterilization of street animals that are later left in their own territory. He also made an emphatic stress on the importance of ANIMAL PROTECTION Laws.
Sri. Shantilal Nahar gave a lecture on leadership qualities. Leadership definitely does not mean to boss ever. The need for the positive approach and encouraging the growth of subordinates were highlighted.

The teacher delegates made a power point presentation with a lot of suggestions for inclusion of humane attitude towards animals in the curriculum.
